Meta has rolled out a new and stricter security feature for WhatsApp users aimed at protecting accounts from cyberattacks, surveillance, and unauthorized access. The new option is called “Strict Account Settings.”
The feature has been introduced at a time when Meta is facing legal scrutiny over alleged misleading claims about WhatsApp privacy, making the update particularly significant.
🛡️ What Is “Strict Account Settings”?
According to WhatsApp, this is an optional lockdown-style security feature. Once enabled, the account automatically switches to highly restrictive privacy and security settings, reducing the risk of hacking, scams, and digital spying.
🚫 What Changes After Enabling the Feature?
After activation, the following protections are applied automatically:
-
Calls from unknown numbers are silenced
-
Images and files sent by non-contacts are blocked
-
Link previews are disabled
-
Blocking of bulk unknown messages is turned on
-
Two-step verification is enabled automatically
-
Security notifications are activated to alert users if a contact’s security code changes
🔒 Stronger Privacy Controls
WhatsApp says privacy restrictions are also tightened:
-
Last seen, online status, profile photo, and “About” visible only to contacts
-
Only contacts or selected users can add you to groups
-
Profile links hidden from non-contacts
These changes significantly limit unwanted access and tracking.
