Karachi’s administration has announced two major traffic measures for heavy vehicles following a recent rise in serious road accidents, according to ARY News.
Under the new plan, a dedicated lane for heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) will be introduced, along with a mandatory speed limit of 30 km/h. Heavy vehicles will be required to remain within the designated lane at all times.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi Syed Hasan Naqvi, which was attended by representatives of transporters, Additional IG Police Afzal Khan, the Secretary Transport, and DIG Traffic.
During the meeting, officials discussed several issues affecting goods transporters, including parking shortages, issuance of HTV licenses, vehicle registration, and insurance coverage.
Commissioner Naqvi instructed traffic police to take strict enforcement measures to prevent further accidents and ensure full compliance with traffic laws. He also assured transporters that the administration would address their concerns, including the provision of designated parking spaces, wherever possible.
As part of the new arrangements, authorities will also review the proposed goods transport terminal. In addition, a dedicated HTV lane will be established from Mai Kolachi to Qayyumabad Bridge, with lane-marking work set to begin immediately.
Once the markings are completed, heavy vehicles will be allowed to use only the designated lane along this route.
The meeting also reviewed proposals to strengthen vehicle fitness inspections and improve insurance mechanisms for both vehicles and bus passengers, as part of broader efforts to improve road safety in the city.
