Sweden is preparing to introduce stricter rules for foreigners seeking citizenship, according to the country’s migration authorities. The proposed reforms aim to tighten eligibility requirements and raise the standards for becoming a Swedish citizen.
Migration Minister Johan Forssell said the current system is too lenient and that citizenship should reflect stronger integration into Swedish society.
Longer Residency Requirement
Under the new proposal, the required period of residence before applying for citizenship could increase from five years to eight years. This change would significantly impact applicants planning long-term settlement.
New Conditions for Applicants
The government plans to introduce several new conditions, including:
-
Proof of a law-abiding lifestyle
-
Financial stability requirements
-
Language proficiency test
-
Knowledge test about Swedish society
These steps aim to ensure better integration and commitment to Swedish values.
Stricter Rules for Criminal Records
Under the proposed system, individuals with criminal records in Sweden or abroad may have to wait up to 17 years after serving their sentence before applying for citizenship.
When Will the Rules Apply?
If approved by parliament, the new regulations could take effect on June 6, Sweden’s national day, and may also apply to pending applications.
