Smog Declines in Punjab, Uncertainty Over School Timings from February 1

As smog levels continue to improve across Punjab, parents are increasingly demanding a change in school timings from February 1, 2026. Many believe that the current schedule, introduced due to heavy smog, is no longer necessary.

At present, schools across the province operate from 8:45 AM to 1:30 PM, following temporary adjustments made to protect students from hazardous air quality.

Current Notification Valid Until April

The Punjab School Education Department had earlier issued a notification extending the existing timings until April 15, 2026. This decision was based on recommendations from the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), which had advised reduced school hours until January 31.

Despite the improvement in weather conditions, no fresh notification has been released so far.

Parents Express Concerns Over Late Start

Parents argue that starting school at 8:45 AM disrupts children’s routines and reduces productive study time. Many families have urged authorities to restore earlier schedules to maintain discipline and academic continuity.

Several parents have also pointed out that traffic congestion increases during later hours, making commuting more difficult for students.

No Immediate Plan for Timing Change

Officials from the School Education Department have confirmed that no immediate strategy has been finalized to revise school timings after February 1.

According to department sources, authorities are currently focusing on long-term planning rather than short-term adjustments.

Possible Change from Ramadan

Education officials have indicated that school timings are likely to be revised from the beginning of Ramadan, keeping in view fasting hours and student comfort.

Until then, existing timings are expected to remain in effect unless a sudden change in environmental conditions occurs.

What Parents Should Do Now

Parents are advised to stay updated through official notifications and school administrations. Any change in timings will be communicated through proper channels to avoid confusion.
