The Punjab government has launched large-scale urban development projects in 51 cities as part of a flagship initiative spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The program aims to improve urban infrastructure, civic facilities, and sanitation across the province.
First Phase Completion Targeted by June
During a Sunday meeting, CM Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to complete the first phase by June 2026, prioritizing sewerage systems and essential urban infrastructure. She emphasized direct oversight of the Punjab Development Plan to ensure transparency, efficiency, and timely execution.
Enhanced Monitoring and Control Rooms
To strengthen monitoring, the government is setting up provincial and district-level control rooms. These units will supervise projects in real-time and facilitate swift resolution of public complaints, ensuring that citizens benefit directly from development work.
Major Sewerage and Drainage Projects
Under the plan:

5,887 km of sewerage lines will be constructed.

181 drainage channels will be built.

Over 33,000 manhole covers will be installed.

Production of HDPE sewerage pipes has begun for durable infrastructure.
In Multan, 232 km of sewerage lines, pumping stations, generators, and road expansion projects are underway. Gujranwala will receive its largest-ever development package, including sewerage lines, a wastewater treatment plant, and modern machinery.
In Dera Ghazi Khan, projects worth over Rs 12 billion are being executed, while Bhakkar, Vehari, and Sheikhupura are receiving upgrades in sanitation, parks, and civic infrastructure.
CM Stresses Timely and Transparent Execution
CM Maryam Nawaz highlighted that all projects must be completed on time and transparently to ensure that development reaches every street and neighborhood across Punjab.
The urban development program is expected to significantly improve public health, sanitation, and overall living standards, marking a historic step in provincial urban planning.
