The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that mobile SIMs remaining inactive for 180 consecutive days will be deactivated across the country.
According to the authority, SIMs that show no call, SMS, or internet usage for six months will be blocked and later made available for reallocation to new users.
What Counts as an Inactive SIM?
PTA clarified that any SIM card on which no activity has been recorded for 180 days will be considered inactive.
Activity includes:
- Making or receiving calls
- Sending or receiving SMS
- Using mobile internet
If none of these actions are performed within the given period, the SIM will be disconnected automatically.
Reason Behind the Decision
PTA stated that the decision aims to:
- Improve mobile network efficiency
- Prevent misuse of unused SIMs
- Reduce fraud, scams, and illegal activities
Authorities noted that inactive SIMs are often exploited for fraudulent and unlawful activities, causing losses to consumers, telecom operators, and institutions.
SIMs to Be Reissued to New Users
Once deactivated, these SIM numbers will be recycled and issued to new users, ensuring better utilization of available mobile resources.
PTA emphasized that the process will be transparent and fair, and the policy will apply equally to all mobile network operators in Pakistan.
Advice for Mobile Users
PTA has advised users who wish to keep their SIMs active to perform at least one activity within the 180-day period, such as:
- Making a phone call
- Sending a text message
- Using mobile data
Even minimal usage will prevent the SIM from being marked inactive.
Awareness Campaign to Follow
The authority assured consumers that public awareness will be ensured before and during the implementation of this policy so users do not face unnecessary inconvenience.
PTA reiterated its commitment to improving service quality while safeguarding users from telecom-related risks.
