Pakistan has officially completed all legal and procedural requirements to allow dual nationality with Germany, bringing major relief to thousands of Pakistanis living there.
According to an official public notice issued by the Embassy of Pakistan in Berlin, Germany has now been formally added to the list of countries with which Pakistan permits dual citizenship.

What Has Changed
Under the new arrangement:
-
Pakistan-origin residents of Germany can apply for German nationality without giving up Pakistani citizenship
-
Renunciation of Pakistani nationality is no longer required
-
Pakistani CNIC/NICOP status can be retained alongside German citizenship
This marks a significant shift from earlier rules, which forced many Pakistanis to surrender their Pakistani nationality in order to become German citizens.
Relief for Pakistani Diaspora
The decision is expected to benefit a large Pakistani diaspora in Germany, particularly those who:
-
Have lived in Germany for many years
-
Wish to secure long-term legal and civic rights
-
Previously delayed applying for German citizenship due to renunciation requirements
Community members have long demanded this change, calling the earlier process emotionally and legally difficult.
Reclaiming Pakistani Citizenship
The embassy also clarified that Pakistan-origin German nationals who had previously renounced Pakistani citizenship will be able to reclaim it.
However, the detailed procedure for restoration of Pakistani nationality will be announced separately through official channels.
Official Confirmation
The announcement was shared as a formal public notice by the Embassy of Pakistan in Berlin to ensure transparency and inform all affected individuals.
Pakistan’s Dual Nationality Policy
Pakistan already allows dual nationality with several countries under specific legal frameworks. The inclusion of Germany significantly expands this list and reflects changing global mobility and diaspora needs.
Officials say the move strengthens ties with overseas Pakistanis and acknowledges their contribution to both countries.
