Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued a strong public advisory, warning citizens that a single careless click or post on social media could result in serious legal consequences — including imprisonment.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the spread of unverified information, fake news, and harmful online content.

Verify Before You Share, Says NCCIA
According to the advisory, social media users must verify any post, news item, or link before sharing it.
The agency stressed that spreading content without proper verification can fall under legal violations, even if done unintentionally.
Officials emphasized that users are responsible for what they post and share on digital platforms.
Serious Warning on False Information
The NCCIA made it clear that sharing unverified or false information about:
-
The judiciary
-
State institutions
-
Other sensitive national matters
is considered a serious legal offence.
Such actions can lead to investigation and prosecution under Pakistan’s cybercrime laws.
Penalties Under PECA Law
The advisory highlighted Section 26A of the PECA Act, which deals with the spread of false information.
Under this law:
-
Offenders can face up to three years in prison
-
A fine of up to Rs 2 million may also be imposed
Authorities said these penalties apply to individuals who deliberately or negligently circulate fake or misleading content.
Call for Responsible Social Media Use
The NCCIA urged the public to:
-
Avoid sharing fake news
-
Stay away from hate speech
-
Use social media responsibly and lawfully
Officials believe responsible online behavior is essential to protect both individual users and national stability.
Why This Warning Matters
With millions of Pakistanis actively using platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, and WhatsApp, even a single viral post can have wide-ranging consequences.
Experts say this advisory serves as a reminder that digital actions carry real-world legal responsibilities.
