Pakistan has recorded another important development in its energy sector as Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced the discovery of new oil and gas reserves in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The discovery is expected to contribute positively to the country’s domestic energy production and reduce pressure on energy imports.
Discovery at Baragzai X-01 Exploratory Well
According to OGDCL, the discovery was made at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well, drilled under the Nashpa Exploration License.
The well was spudded on December 30, 2024, and successfully drilled to a depth of 5,170 meters.
Production Test Results
During the cased-hole drill stem test, the well produced promising results:
-
Oil production: 3,100 barrels per day
-
Gas production: 8.15 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD)
OGDCL confirmed that earlier tests had also indicated the presence of hydrocarbons in the Kingriali and Datta formations, further strengthening the commercial potential of the discovery.
Shareholding Details of the License
OGDCL informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) that the Nashpa Exploration License is jointly held by:
-
OGDCL: 65%
-
Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL): 30%
-
Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL): 5%
The discovery reflects the success of collaborative exploration efforts in the region.
Impact on Pakistan’s Energy Sector
OGDCL stated that the new reserves will increase the company’s hydrocarbon resource base and also add to Pakistan’s overall energy reserves.
Energy experts believe such discoveries can help:
-
Improve energy security
-
Reduce reliance on imported fuel
-
Strengthen the national economy
-
Boost investor confidence in Pakistan’s upstream sector
