With Basant celebrations returning, Lahore is facing an unexpected shortage of kites and strings as demand surges beyond local supply capacity.
After nearly two decades of restrictions, the festival’s conditional return (Feb 6–8) has triggered massive excitement, but local kite makers are struggling to meet the sudden demand.
Supplies Being Brought From Other Cities
Traders have started bringing large consignments from Karachi and Peshawar through trains and buses to fill the gap.
However, this inter-city sourcing has pushed prices sharply higher.
Prices Skyrocket
Buyers say prices of string (dor) have doubled in some cases. One customer reported paying nearly twice the usual amount due to limited availability.
Even in Karachi markets, stock levels are reportedly decreasing because of high demand from Lahore traders.
Traders Caught Off Guard
Shopkeepers admit that after years of limited activity, the industry was not fully prepared for such a strong comeback. Many traders say they plan to prepare better next year.
Festival Fever at Peak
Despite rising prices, enthusiasm for Basant remains high, with rooftops and markets buzzing with preparations.
