Federal Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi has announced the creation of a new cricket team named “Rawalpindi Tigers”, exclusively composed of talented young players from Rawalpindi. The announcement was made during a press conference aimed at promoting grassroots cricket and nurturing local talent.
Trials for Young Players in Rawalpindi
Abbasi confirmed that trials for the team will be held on February 14 and 15, organized with the support of Lahore Qalandars. These trials will be conducted strictly on merit, and only youth with a valid Rawalpindi domicile will be eligible to participate.
The press conference emphasized that no recommendations or favoritism will be entertained, ensuring that only the most talented players are selected.
High-Performance Training and Overseas Opportunities
The top 20 selected players will be sent to Lahore Qalandars’ High-Performance Center for intensive training. Special attention will be given to exceptionally fast and talented bowlers, who may even be sent abroad for advanced coaching at the government’s expense.
Abbasi stressed that all efforts will be made to develop Rawalpindi Tigers into a world-class cricket team, aiming to prepare them for national and international competitions.
Future PSL Participation
Federal Minister Abbasi revealed that the long-term vision includes introducing Rawalpindi Tigers into the Pakistan Super League (PSL) within the next three years. This move is part of a larger initiative to promote cricket at the district level and provide young players with global exposure.
Why This Is Important for Rawalpindi Cricket
The launch of Rawalpindi Tigers offers local youth a platform to showcase their talent, potentially transforming the city into a cricket hub. It also strengthens the pathway for young players to reach professional leagues and represent Pakistan at higher levels.
