Two legendary figures of world cricket, Ricky Ponting and Ravi Shastri, have openly expressed concerns about Pakistan star batter Babar Azam’s recent inconsistency and shared important suggestions regarding his role in the team.
Slow Start Against Netherlands Raises Alarm
During Pakistan’s opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against the Netherlands, Babar Azam scored 15 runs off 18 balls.
Both Ponting and Shastri believe this slow start created pressure not only on Babar himself but also on his batting partner.
Ponting: Early Boundaries Are Crucial
Speaking on the ICC Review show, Ricky Ponting explained that when a batter consumes too many balls without scoring freely, it affects the team’s momentum.
He said Babar needs to find boundaries early in his innings; otherwise, Pakistan risk losing control in the powerplay overs.
Shastri: Babar Must Show Early Intent
Ravi Shastri highlighted the mental pressure faced by top players at this stage of their careers.
According to Shastri, Babar must adopt a more aggressive approach in the first few balls, even if it carries a risk of getting out.
He warned that in T20 cricket, middle overs are extremely important, and there is no room for wasting deliveries.
Batting Position Also Under Question
Ponting also questioned Pakistan’s decision to send Babar at number four against the Netherlands.
He suggested that Babar should return to his familiar number three position, where he can take advantage of fielding restrictions during the powerplay.
Pakistan Need the Best Version of Babar
Ponting added that if Babar’s power-hitting has declined, the team management must place him in conditions where he can succeed.
He emphasized that Pakistan will need the best version of Babar Azam if they want to progress deep into the tournament.
