Big Traffic Relief Plan for Rawalpindi and Islamabad Revealed

The decision includes shifting major facilities located at:

  • Faizabad

  • Pirwadhai General Bus Stand

  • Peshawar Road

  • Chungi No. 26

These areas are among the busiest transport corridors and are major contributors to daily traffic jams.

Rawalpindi Ring Road to Play Central Role

Officials stated that the Rawalpindi Ring Road project is expected to be completed in March.

Before the road becomes fully operational, authorities plan to move transport activities away from densely populated areas.

More than 750 acres of land will be acquired along the Ring Road to develop modern transport terminals and logistics zones.

How Passengers and Goods Transport Will Work

Under the new plan:

  • Passengers traveling to other cities will use smaller feeder vehicles to reach the new bus terminals

  • Goods transport serving Ganj Mandi will be limited to designated truck terminals on the Ring Road

This system aims to reduce the movement of heavy vehicles inside city centers.

Traffic Pressure Expected to Reduce

Currently, heavy transport from all four provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, enters Rawalpindi via the motorway and GT Road.

Officials believe relocating these facilities will:

  • Significantly reduce congestion

  • Protect inner-city roads from damage

  • Improve traffic flow in city and cantonment areas

Decision Taken with Stakeholders’ Consensus

The plan was finalized with the agreement of:

  • Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA)

  • Regional Transport Authority (RTA)

  • Traffic Police

  • Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation

  • Other relevant departments

Final Thoughts

If implemented successfully, this move could bring long-term relief to residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and improve overall urban mobility.
