Net Metering Issue Takes a New Turn — Major Government Buildings Affected

The controversy surrounding restrictions on the net metering program has entered a new phase, as several key government buildings in Punjab have now seen their net metering facilities suspended following federal-level decisions.

Sources confirm that the Punjab government’s Energy Department has formally communicated the matter to the chief executive of Lahore Electric Supply Company, instructing the utility to halt net metering at selected locations.

According to officials, net metering has been suspended at both the new and old Punjab Assembly buildings, while the same restriction has also been imposed at the Speaker House. In addition, net metering facilities linked to solar systems at the People’s House and the MPA Hostel have been stopped.

Sources further revealed that the Punjab government had already submitted applications for net metering approval at various government offices. However, despite the completion of required documentation, approvals were put on hold. It is reported that the Power Division issued directives last month instructing LESCO to stop approving net metering-related cases.

The matter has also drawn the attention of National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, which has sought explanations from LESCO and other electricity distribution companies regarding the suspension.

Sources note that the federal government imposed the restriction before formally amending net metering regulations, a move that has triggered concern and criticism from multiple quarters. Observers say the situation has created uncertainty for both public institutions and private consumers awaiting clarity on the future of net metering in Pakistan.
