Earlier Friday School Closures in Dubai
From January 9, 2026, private schools and early childhood centres in Dubai will be required to end classes by 11:30 am on Fridays, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). The change aligns with the updated national Friday prayer schedule and allows students and staff to return home before prayers.
Friday Prayer Time Standardized Across the UAE
Starting January 2, 2026, Friday sermons and prayers will be held at 12:45 pm nationwide, the General Authority of Islamic Affairs announced. Worshippers have been advised to arrive early to avoid missing the sermon.
New Tiered Tax on Sugary Drinks
From January 1, 2026, the UAE has implemented a tiered excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The new structure replaces the flat 50% tax and links taxation directly to sugar content, aligning the UAE with a broader GCC health-focused taxation model.
Dubai Airport Expands Red Carpet Biometric Service
Dubai Airports will expand its Red Carpet biometric service to arriving passengers at Terminal 3 by January 2026. After a one-time biometric registration, travelers can use AI-powered smart corridors for faster immigration clearance.
Nationwide Ban on Additional Single-Use Plastics
From January 1, 2026, the UAE has banned the import, manufacture, and sale of several single-use plastic products, including:

Paid Parking Introduced in Discovery Gardens
From January 15, 2026, paid parking will be introduced across Discovery Gardens. Each residential unit without a designated parking space will receive one free parking permit, while additional vehicles will require paid subscriptions.
Deadline Set for Content Creator License
The UAE Media Council has set January 31, 2026, as the deadline for content creators earning income through promotional posts to obtain an Advertiser License. The license is free for the first three years for UAE citizens and residents and aims to regulate digital advertising and influencer marketing.
