E-Challan System Under Review — Sindh Assembly Discussion Yields Update

The Sindh government has moved closer to easing public concerns over steep electronic traffic challans in Karachi, with officials agreeing to review and potentially reduce several penalty categories.

The development emerged during a meeting of the Sindh Assembly’s special committee on e-challans, held in Karachi. The session was chaired by Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar and attended by committee members, where the rising burden of traffic fines was discussed in detail.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, the government agreed to lower penalties for motorcyclists after the issue was raised by opposition leader Ali Khurshidi. Authorities also expressed agreement, in principle, to reduce fines for vehicles with engine capacities up to 1,000cc.

During the discussion, Ali Khurshidi clarified that the opposition supports the use of technology for traffic management and enforcement but believes that current penalties are disproportionately high and need reassessment.

Officials indicated that further consultations will take place before final recommendations are submitted, signaling possible relief for thousands of daily commuters affected by the current fine structure.
