Josh Hazlewood has not played competitive cricket since suffering hamstring and Achilles injuries during the Sheffield Shield on November 12.
Although the 35-year-old remained in Sydney while the Australian squad traveled to Sri Lanka, he was originally included in the World Cup squad in the hope that he would recover in time.
However, just days before Australia’s opening match against Ireland in Colombo, officials confirmed that Hazlewood is not fit enough to play without risking further damage.
Selector Explains the Decision
Australia selector Tony Dodemaide explained that the medical updates were not encouraging.
He said the team hoped Hazlewood would reach match fitness by the Super 8 stage, but accelerating his recovery could lead to greater injury risk.
Because of this, Australia decided not to take any chances.
No Immediate Replacement Announced
Cricket Australia has confirmed that no replacement player will be named immediately.
Officials believe the current squad has enough depth for the early matches, and any changes will be considered later if needed.
Australia’s Pace Attack Takes a Major Hit
Hazlewood’s absence further weakens Australia’s fast-bowling resources.
-
Mitchell Starc has retired from T20 internationals
-
Pat Cummins is also unavailable due to a back injury
This means it will be the first T20 World Cup in more than a decade without at least one member of Australia’s famous pace trio.
Spin Bowling Likely to Play Bigger Role
With pace options limited and conditions expected to assist spinners early in the tournament, Australia are likely to rely more on spin bowling.
Adam Zampa is expected to lead the spin attack, supported by Matt Kuhnemann and Cooper Connolly.
Some Positive News for Australia
Cricket Australia has confirmed that:
-
Fast bowler Nathan Ellis
-
Batter Tim David
are on track to be available for the group stage.
Zampa is also expected to play in Australia’s opening match against Ireland.
Australia Enter Tournament Under Pressure
Australia, winners of the 2021 T20 World Cup, come into the tournament after a disappointing 3–0 loss in a warm-up T20 series against Pakistan.
Final Thoughts
Losing Josh Hazlewood is a major setback for Australia, and combined with other absences, it leaves the defending champions facing serious challenges before the tournament has even begun.
