With Basant 2026 scheduled for 6th, 7th, and 8th February, kite flying enthusiasts in Lahore have started stocking up on kites and threads. Markets across the city have opened for sales, drawing large crowds eager to prepare for the festival.
On the first day of sales, markets such as Mochi Gate and Gaddhi Bazaar saw heavy foot traffic, with buyers scrambling to get their hands on kites and the high-strength threads (dor) used for kite flying.
Skyrocketing Prices Surprise Shoppers
The prices of kites and threads have left many buyers shocked. A single “tawa gadda” kite and a basic kite can cost around Rs 400, while a slightly larger kite priced Rs 500–600 has also become popular.
Meanwhile, dor (thread) prices have seen a steep rise. A two-piece spool is now selling for Rs 4,500–5,000, leaving some festival-goers surprised at the cost. Experts say high demand ahead of Basant, along with limited supply, has contributed to the price surge.
Basant Preparations in Full Swing
Despite rising costs, citizens are flocking to markets to prepare for Lahore’s famous kite-flying festival. Vendors expect sales to peak just before Basant, with enthusiasts hoping to secure premium kites and strong threads for competitive kite battles in the skies.
Authorities, meanwhile, have reminded buyers to follow safety rules and local regulations during the festival to prevent accidents and ensure a safe celebration.
