The Sindh government has increased flour prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, further intensifying financial pressure on citizens already struggling with high inflation.
According to official notifications, the retail price of flour has been increased by Rs. 8 per kilogram, setting the new rate at Rs. 107 per kg. Following the hike, a 10-kg flour bag will now cost Rs. 1,070, reflecting an overall increase of Rs. 80 per bag.
New Official Rates Take Immediate Effect
The price revision was formally announced by the Commissioner Karachi, and the new rates have come into effect immediately.
Under the notification:
-
Ex-mill price: Rs. 104 per kg
-
10-kg ex-mill bag: Rs. 1,040
In December 2025, the official price of flour was fixed at Rs. 99 per kg, showing a steady upward trend in recent months.
Flour Unavailable at Official Rates in Markets
Despite government-set prices, consumers across Karachi report that flour is not being sold at official rates in retail markets.
Instead:
-
Flour is being sold at Rs. 125 per kg
-
10-kg bag is available for Rs. 1,250
-
Chakki flour is being sold at up to Rs. 140 per kg in several areas
Authorities have so far failed to ensure compliance with official pricing.
Rising Prices Ahead of Ramadan Spark Public Worry
The increase has triggered public concern ahead of Ramadan, as flour is a staple food item for households across Sindh. Higher flour prices directly impact the cost of basic foods like roti, making daily meals increasingly unaffordable for low-income families.
With Ramadan approaching, citizens are urging the government to ensure availability of flour at official rates and take action against profiteering.
