Former Australian cricketer and ex-Pakistan Test head coach Jason Gillespie is reportedly set to become the head coach of the Pakistan Super League’s newest franchise, Hyderabad. The development was first shared by a local sports journalist on social media and later retweeted by Gillespie himself, adding credibility to the reports.
Gillespie, a former fast bowler for Australia, brings vast coaching experience from county cricket and various domestic leagues. He was appointed head coach of Pakistan’s men’s Test team in April 2024 by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). However, he resigned in December 2024 following differences with PCB management.
Gillespie’s Previous Tenure With Pakistan Team
During his time with Pakistan, Gillespie also served briefly as interim head coach of the limited-overs team after Gary Kirsten’s departure in 2024. His tenure was reportedly affected by internal communication issues and disagreements over team management decisions. Later, Gillespie openly criticized the board regarding governance and planning matters.
Despite his earlier exit, his potential return to Pakistan cricket through the PSL reflects renewed trust in his coaching abilities and professional expertise.
PSL Expansion and Hyderabad Franchise
The Pakistan Super League, launched in 2016, is considered one of the world’s leading T20 competitions. Over the years, it has attracted top international players, coaches, and support staff.
The upcoming 11th edition of the PSL, starting on March 26, will be historic as the league expands to eight teams for the first time. Hyderabad and Sialkot have joined as new franchises.
Hyderabad is owned by Fawad Sarwar and secured its spot in the league by winning the franchise auction with a bid of Rs 1.75 billion ($6.24 million). The franchise is now building its management and coaching staff ahead of its debut season.
Big Boost for Hyderabad’s PSL Campaign
If confirmed, Gillespie’s appointment would be a major boost for Hyderabad as the team prepares for its first PSL appearance. His international experience and deep understanding of Pakistan cricket could play a key role in shaping the franchise’s performance.
Fans are now eagerly waiting for an official announcement from the PCB or the franchise regarding the final decision.
