The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an important warning regarding the deactivation of inactive mobile SIM cards across the country. According to the regulator, SIMs that remain unused for six consecutive months (180 days) may be blocked by telecom operators.
PTA stated that mobile operators are authorized to deactivate SIM cards that have not been used for calls, text messages, or internet services during this period. Once a SIM is blocked due to inactivity, the number may be reissued to another customer.
Blocked Numbers May Be Assigned to New Users
Officials clarified that after a number is reallocated to a new user, the previous owner loses all legal rights over it. This means any future use of the number cannot be claimed by the original subscriber.
However, customers who wish to retain their SIM numbers despite temporary non-use can submit a written request or email to their respective mobile operators. This allows them to keep ownership of the number for a specified period.
PTA Advises Responsible SIM Usage
The authority has advised mobile users to use their SIM cards responsibly to avoid inconvenience. Even occasional calls, messages, or data usage can help keep a SIM active.
PTA emphasized that these measures aim to improve network management, prevent misuse, and ensure efficient allocation of mobile numbers nationwide. Users are encouraged to regularly check the status of their SIMs and stay informed about telecom regulations.
