Pakistan has officially announced its 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. In a major development, seven players from the 2024 squad have been dropped, signaling a significant shift in team strategy.
All-rounder Salman Ali Agha has been appointed as the new captain for the mega event, reflecting the selectors’ confidence in his leadership and recent performances.
Key Players Left Out of the Squad
One of the most surprising omissions is Mohammad Rizwan, who has been a regular member of Pakistan’s T20 setup for years. Despite playing in the 2024 World Cup, his recent form in the shortest format reportedly failed to impress selectors.
Fast bowler Haris Rauf has also been excluded, a decision that has raised eyebrows among fans. Rauf has represented Pakistan in 94 T20 Internationals and was considered a key strike bowler in previous tournaments.
Other Notable Omissions
Wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan will miss out due to changes in team balance and fitness considerations. Similarly, experienced middle-order batter Iftikhar Ahmed has not been selected, despite featuring in the 2024 edition.
Veteran all-rounder Imad Wasim, who was part of the previous World Cup squad, has already announced his retirement from international cricket. Former pacer Mohammad Amir has also stepped away from the game after retiring in December 2024.
Meanwhile, fast bowler Mohammad Abbas Afridi, who was named in the 2024 squad but did not play any match, has once again been left out.
Group Stage Matches and Pakistan’s Schedule
Pakistan has been placed in Group A, alongside India, USA, and the Netherlands. The team will begin its campaign on February 7 in Colombo against the Netherlands.
The highly anticipated Pakistan vs India clash is scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, a match that is expected to attract massive global viewership.
