The Punjab government has finalized a new proposal to revise the annual holiday schedule for schools and colleges across the province. The main objective of this plan is to increase academic days to 190 per year, ensuring better learning outcomes for students.
According to official sources, a special committee has prepared recommendations to reduce long vacation periods, especially during summer, in order to improve syllabus completion and academic consistency.
Summer Vacations Likely to Be Reduced
Under the proposed plan, summer holidays may be shortened from two and a half months to just six weeks. This change is aimed at minimizing learning gaps that often occur during extended breaks.
Education experts believe that long vacations negatively impact students’ focus and retention. Shorter breaks may help maintain academic momentum throughout the year.
Focus on Student Performance and Curriculum Completion
The government’s decision is mainly driven by concerns over incomplete syllabi and declining academic performance. With limited classroom time, teachers often struggle to finish courses properly.
By increasing teaching days, authorities hope to:
-
Improve examination results
-
Strengthen conceptual learning
-
Reduce dependency on private tuition
-
Enhance classroom engagement
Private Schools Support the Proposal
Private school associations have welcomed the government’s move, stating that structured academic calendars are essential for quality education. They believe that uniform holiday policies will help both public and private institutions maintain educational standards.
Possible Implementation Timeline
While the proposal has received positive feedback, final approval is expected after consultations with stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and school administrations.
If approved, the revised schedule may be implemented from the next academic year.
