The United Arab Emirates (UAE), including Dubai, has enforced strict laws against posting or sharing offensive content on social media, warning users of heavy fines and possible imprisonment.
According to media reports, posting, commenting, or sharing insulting or defamatory content against an individual, organization, or company can result in fines ranging from AED 250,000 to AED 500,000.
Fines, Jail, or Both
Dubai Police have warned that damaging a person’s reputation or dignity online will result in legal action. In some cases, offenders may face up to one year in prison or more, while in serious cases, both imprisonment and fines may be imposed together.
Authorities clarified that reposting or forwarding offensive content carries the same punishment as creating it.
Private Messages Also Covered
Dubai Police and the Public Prosecution have repeatedly urged users to “think before posting on social media.” Warnings were also issued in 2025 and 2026, during which several individuals were fined up to AED 50,000 under civil liability laws.
The report further states that the law applies not only to public posts, but also to WhatsApp messages, private chats, and even deleted content, as screenshots can be used as legal evidence.
Authorities stressed that social media platforms must be used responsibly, and any misuse could lead to serious legal consequences.
