Punjab Introduces Pakistan’s First Electric Green Policing Unit

Punjab has achieved a historic milestone in law enforcement by launching Pakistan’s first-ever Green Policing Unit, powered entirely by electric patrol vehicles. The initiative was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, marking a major step towards eco-friendly governance and modern policing.

During the launch ceremony in Lahore, the Chief Minister personally inspected the electric patrol vehicle and also drove the electric car herself, demonstrating confidence in the new technology.

Electric Patrol Vehicles to Begin Operations in Lahore

As part of the first phase, state-of-the-art BYD electric vehicles will be deployed for traffic and patrol duties in Lahore. These vehicles are equipped with advanced law enforcement technology, ensuring both efficiency and safety during operations.

Officials briefed the Chief Minister that each electric patrol vehicle has a driving range of up to 410 kilometers on a single charge. The vehicles also support fast charging, allowing the battery to recharge from 30 to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes.

Advanced Surveillance and Safety Features

The electric patrol vehicles are fitted with:

  • Modern surveillance PA systems
  • Police emergency lights
  • 360-degree cameras
  • Speed detection and monitoring equipment

These features are designed to enhance on-ground policing, traffic management, and real-time surveillance.

Major Fuel Savings and Zero Carbon Emissions

According to official data, 103 conventional patrol vehicles currently consume nearly 28,000 liters of fuel per month, costing approximately Rs 7.42 million. By shifting to electric vehicles, Punjab Police can save around 4,500 liters of fuel per vehicle annually.

The move will significantly reduce operational costs, eliminate fuel dependency, and ensure zero carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Expansion Planned Across Punjab

CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed authorities to gradually increase the number of electric vehicles in the Green Policing Unit and expand the initiative to other districts in phases.

She stated that the adoption of electric vehicles reflects Punjab’s vision of clean air, sustainable development, and good governance, adding that green policing will play a vital role in reducing pollution and modernizing public services.
